Peacock Pottery
About this site
Foley Art China – Peacock Pottery. This site was started as a way of seeing if anybody had information about the pottery produced by E Brain & Co at the Foley Works Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent in the years between 1905 and 1913. Hopefully it will also provide a valuable source to others.
The information on this website has been gathered from numerious sources over the years, but I know there are large gaps. So if you have any information about the company and its products I would love to hear from you.
E. Brain & Co Ltd
Throughout their sixty years of potting the firm of E. Brain & Co based at the Foley Works, Fenton, Stoke-upon-Trent, specialised in bone china tea and breakfast wares of high quality and good design. They constantly employed acknowledged or up-and-coming designers and artists to produce wares at the forefront of design and were associated with good taste and modernity.
During the early part of the 20th century they introduced the manufacture of china dinner ware, for a market which was steadily growing. Much high quality “hotel ware” china was specifically designed and produced for use by shipping lines on the great ocean liners.
Foley Art China – Peacock Pottery
When E. Brain & Co relaunched the company in 1905 they updated the trading name, image and product range. The trading name and back stamp changed from the traditional Staffordshire Knot used by several potteries, to the far more contemporary Foley Art China – Peacock Pottery name with stylised peacock label mark.
The pattern number or name was usually painted or printed underneath the trade mark. The design numbers started at 1 and go to just over 100 (current highest I’ve found is 110). The design names include Indian Tree, Scottish Thistle, Swastika and Silhouette
